Home Office Planning

In this 21st century, it is becoming the norm for many folks to have a home office, with many industries affording the opportunity for their personnel to ply their trade from home. My office is in our home and as positive as this experience usually is, there are/were also challenges which needed to be addressed.

To be sucessful working from home, you really do need to plan a designated space to work from; an area free from distractions where you feel you really are "going to work".  A well layed out office is key to working efficiently from home. Here are a few tips that have worked for me:


1) A corner in our basement did NOT work as I'm more productive in the light.  Natural light is the very best of course, so try to choose your office space accordingly.  Try to position lighting in the room so that there is a nice even flow.

2) Remember that you will need your electronics to be efficient ... printers, computers, copiers etc. will need ample wiring (and placement).  Depending upon your business, don't forget to plan space for storage solutions in your office too.

3) You don't need to spend oodles of money on furniture.  Kijiji was my most excellent (and reasonably priced) source to pick up the almost-new desk, chair, file cabinets  and more ..... things that are necessary for our real estate business, and I believe for most businesses.

4) Think about the noise factor in your office.  Remember that hard surfaces do amplify sound where soft surfaces (carpet, curtains, etc.) mute excessive noise.  Will your office window be facing a busy street or peaceful yard area?

5) Although this office is in your home, make sure your family understands this is YOUR work-space where privacy must be respected.  Non work-related items should NOT be stored in that area.  You must be clear with family members to NOT remove your supplies and other things you need to work.
