High Efficiency Washing Machines

As crazy as it sounds, I really don’t mind doing laundry …I  kinda like it really.  So, when we upgraded to a front load washer, I had so many questions to be sure our clothes would be getting the care they needed so they would continue to look their very best.

First, I must tell you that I believe my clothes are even cleaner with the front load machine, they spin so dry that they almost need no time on the clothes line/rack or in the dryer.  Also, the high efficiency detergent is much more gentle to the clothes and the environment too.

There were some things I had to be educated on with my front loading machine. First, these machines give a new meaning to “water tight”.  As with anything that has water, if no air is getting to the drum area, it will start to smell musty.

When your laundry cycle is completed, remove the clothes right away. Two things I’ve learned to do when my machine is not in  use.  First, dry out the door seal and remove anything that might have got caught in that seal (perhaps a loose button, coins ….).  Secondly, just leave the door open a bit and remove the soap/softener dispenser tray.  In this way, air can circulate easily and you will never have a musty smell (I’ve had my front load washer for 3 years, and practice this simple trick when my washer is not in use and can tell you, my machine has NEVER smelled musty).

Of course, over time soap scum can build up and if there is dampness, bacteria can form.  There are special products on the market for washing the interior of your washing machine.   But why not make your own!  Just mix ¼ cup of baking soda with ¼ cup of water and add it to the detergent drawer. Now, pour 2 cups of vinegar right in the drum and run an empty load on the very hottest setting.  Vinegar and water is also very safe for hand washing the door gasket.

You must always use the laundry detergent marked HE (high efficiency). The volume of soap/suds is much less and this special detergent does not have additives that will rot your door gasket/seal.
